Tie Dye Designs

If you are looking for a great idea for a party, try hosting a Tie Dye Party. It would be a hip fun party and you could tie dye all the clothing that people are wearing at the party. Tie dying is actually the easiest thing to do and there are even kits you can purchase that will help with the process. When you are setting up your party make sure you have an area designated to make your designs that can become a bit messy. You also may wish to have two work areas, a prep station and a dye station. Use a large area like a garage basement or my favourite would be to host the party outside.

In your areas make sure that you have all the necessary materials available for everyone. My first suggestion would be to have rubber gloves for everyone to wear. Your guests probably would like their hands not to change colors to match their clothing. I would also set out different sized buckets or large bowls. These would be used to hold the shirts and the die solution. You also need a large bowl full of elastic bands, paper towel, and material dye (I would purchase a tie dye kit).

Items to Tie Dye

Think about purchasing clothing for everyone, or on your invite instruct your guests to bring clothing to tie dye. Many wish to locate cheap t-shirts to tie dye, but expand your mind … you can dye anything. What really do you want to see your guests model during the party. Some clothing that comes to mind would be night gowns, underwear, boxers, tank tops, dresses, hair things, bandanas, and of course cheap t-shirts.

Types of Materials to Dye

You really can tie dye anything that is made of 100% cotton.  There are many types of cotton blends on the market, but you really want the 100% to be cotton.  It is important to pre-wash and dry the items.  You want them to soften, be pre-shrunk and prepare the item to absorb the dye to the best of their ability.

Making Dye or Purchase?

This is a big question for people. It is fairly simple to make your dye, but for my suggestion at a party you want things to go as smoothly as possible, so I would purchase the dye. There are many kits on the market and tons available with Amazon.

No matter which choice you make you want to use the dye within a half hour once it is mixed. This will help the colors to stay crisp.

I usually keep the dye or bleach in dye bottles. I like bottles that look like old fashion ketchup containers. The ones with a larger bottom and a smaller top. This way you have a lot of control with the amount of dye being placed onto the clothing.

Preparing Clothing

Simply put you roll up your shirt and place elastics around it.  You want to keep it as tight as possible.  The different ways that you roll the shirt will create the different patterns.

When you have the material all tied up, this is when you squirt the dye onto it.  This is one of the fun parts.  Have patterns hung already so your guests can see how the colors and patterns will turn out.

Circle Pattern

Lay you t-shirt flat on a table (or flat surface).  Pull it up in the middle of where you want your circle.  Lift the shirt completely in the air, letting it fall with gravity.  Tie a number of rubber bands down the shirt.  Start at the top where your hand was holding the shirt and make your way down (just like how the shirt was hanging).

Marbled Design

Lay your t-shirt flat on a table.  Put your hands outside of your shirt on the table and push it into a ball in all directions.  Place a number of large elastic bands around the outside of the shirt.  Each elastic goes around the shirt once.

Single Stripe

Lay your t-shirt flat on a level surface.  Push the shirt into a long line (push inwards, first arms, then body in).  Place two elastic bands around the chest area of the shirt.

When the colors are all on the clothing take the elastics off.  This is really exciting.  You get to see how your work in turning out.  Lay the clothing flat and let it dry.

The next day wash the clothing all by itself in a washing machine.  I would make sure that it is alone to avoid any dye getting into your other clothing, because if there is any excess dye in the clothing it will wash it out.

From this day on people will remember your party every time they wear their tie dye creation or when they see another person wearing anything tie dyed.  There is nothing better than a memorable party!

Thanks for giving me the idea of tie dye party. My brother's birthday is next month. I will organize this one. LOL. And the marble tie dye design, I love it.
